FREEHOLD, N.J. – The Center for Violence Prevention and Self Defense (CVPSD) recently completed a specialized Crisis Intervention and Safety training program for a pediatric organization providing speech, language, feeding, and occupational therapy services.
The training was designed to equip therapists, clinicians, and support staff with practical skills to safely recognize, manage, and de-escalate challenging situations while maintaining a compassionate, trauma-informed approach to care.
Participants learned strategies to improve situational awareness, communicate effectively during moments of crisis, establish professional boundaries, and respond safely to escalating behaviors.

Working in pediatric therapy environments often requires staff to balance therapeutic engagement with personal safety. CVPSD's evidence-based approach emphasizes protecting both the professional and the individual in crisis through proactive prevention, effective communication, and appropriate response techniques.
"Our goal is to give professionals the confidence and practical skills they need to safely navigate difficult interactions without compromising the dignity of the children and families they serve," said Will DeMuth, Director of the Center for Violence Prevention and Self Defense. "When staff feel prepared, they are better equipped to remain calm, make sound decisions, and maintain a safe therapeutic environment."
The training was great and very informative. Melissa did an excellent job presenting the material in a way that was engaging and easy to apply. The concepts were especially relevant to our team and the population of children and families we work with. We walked away with practical strategies that I know our staff will be able to use in their day-to-day interactions.

By the conclusion of the training, participants demonstrated improved crisis intervention knowledge, enhanced situational awareness, and greater confidence in applying safety principles during challenging encounters. The program also reinforced teamwork and communication strategies that contribute to a safer workplace for both staff and clients.
