Protecting Teachers From a Student Who Bites or Scratches
Biting and scratching are among the most common causes of staff injury in special education and early childhood settings. For educators who work closely with students who have significant communication or sensory needs, these behaviors are rarely acts of malice.
They are usually a form of communication, a response to frustration, sensory overload, or an unmet need. That reality does not make the injuries any less serious. Human bites can break skin, transmit infection, and cause lasting tissue damage, while repeated incidents erode staff morale and retention.
Protecting teachers requires a layered approach: physical protection through specialized gear, proactive behavioral strategies that reduce the likelihood of incidents, and strict medical and reporting protocols when an injury does occur.

Protective Gear and Physical Safety
Bite-resistant sleeves and garments
The first layer of defense is physical. Specialized arm guards and sleeves made from high-performance fibers such as aramid or ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene are designed and rated for cut and bite resistance.
These protect the forearms, the most frequently bitten area during hand-over-hand assistance, transfers, and de-escalation, by preventing teeth from breaking the skin even under significant pressure.
Unlike improvised solutions, purpose-built bite-resistant garments are tested to recognized protection standards, remain breathable enough for all-day wear, and are discreet enough not to stigmatize the student or alarm the classroom.
Schools that supply this equipment to staff working with students who have a documented history of biting consistently report fewer skin-breaking injuries and fewer lost workdays.
Loose layering
Not every situation calls for rated protective equipment, and not every district provides it. As a supplemental or interim measure, staff can dress strategically: long sleeves, jackets, or cardigans made of thicker, durable fabric add a meaningful barrier against sudden lunges, grabs, and scratches.
Loose layers are harder to grip, absorb some of the force of a bite, and give a teacher an extra fraction of a second to disengage. Staff should also keep hair tied back, avoid dangling jewelry or lanyards that can be grabbed, and keep fingernails trimmed to reduce injury during blocks and releases.
Safe positioning and body awareness
Gear only matters when contact happens; good positioning prevents much of that contact in the first place. Teachers should maintain adequate physical distance whenever the task allows, approach from the side rather than head-on, and avoid placing hands or forearms directly in front of a student's face during escalation.
High-risk moments such as transitions between activities, personal care routines, toileting, feeding, and the removal of a preferred item deserve heightened awareness and, ideally, a second staff member. Standing at an angle with one foot back allows a quick pivot away from a lunge, and keeping hands above the student's shoulder line during close support reduces the chance of a bite landing.
Many districts formalize these techniques through certified training programs in safe crisis intervention, which every staff member working with the student should complete.
Behavioral and Proactive Strategies
Physical protection manages the symptom; behavior support addresses the cause. The most effective injury prevention happens long before teeth or nails ever make contact.
Track triggers with ABC data
The ABC technique (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence) is the foundation of understanding why a student bites. Staff log what happened immediately before each incident (the antecedent), exactly what the behavior looked like, and what followed it. Over a few weeks, patterns almost always emerge: bites cluster around denied requests, loud environments, hunger, specific times of day, particular demands, or transitions away from preferred activities.
Once the team can predict the conditions under which biting occurs, they can modify those conditions by adjusting schedules, pre-teaching transitions, offering choices, or reducing demands during vulnerable periods.
This data also gives the school's behavior analyst or student support team what they need to conduct a formal Functional Behavior Assessment and build a Behavior Intervention Plan with concrete prevention and response steps for every adult in the room.
Provide sensory tools
For many students, biting meets a genuine oral-motor or sensory need. Offering safe, appropriate alternatives such as chewable jewelry ("chewelry"), chew tubes, crunchy snacks, fidget tools, or access to a calming sensory space can redirect that need before it escalates into aggression.
An occupational therapist can help identify whether the student is seeking oral input, deep pressure, or escape from overstimulation, and match tools accordingly. The key is proactive access: sensory supports work best when they are available throughout the day, not offered only after a student has already escalated.
Teach alternative communication
Biting and scratching often function as communication for students who lack a faster, easier way to say "stop," "help," "I'm done," or "I want that." Teaching functional communication through picture exchange cards, simple signs, gestures, a speech-generating device, or a "break" card gives the student a replacement behavior that works better than biting.
For the replacement to stick, adults must honor it immediately and consistently: if handing over a break card reliably produces a break, and biting no longer does, the safer behavior wins. This is the single most durable form of staff protection, because it reduces the student's need for the behavior rather than merely defending against it.
Post-Bite Medical Protocols
When a bite does occur, the response must be immediate and standardized. A human bite that breaks the skin is a medical event, not a minor scrape; the human mouth carries bacteria that can cause serious infection.
First, the injured staff member should wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for several minutes, apply gentle pressure to control bleeding, and cover it with a clean dressing. Any bite that breaks the skin warrants prompt medical evaluation, ideally the same day.
A clinician will assess the need for wound care, antibiotics, a tetanus booster if the staff member's vaccination is not current, and, in accordance with the school's bloodborne pathogen exposure control plan, any indicated follow-up testing.
Scratches that break skin should be cleaned and monitored for signs of infection such as spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or fever. The school nurse should be involved from the first minutes, both to provide care and to begin documentation.
Formal Injury Reporting
Every incident, even one that does not break skin, should be documented through the district's formal injury and incident reporting system, typically the same day. A complete report records the date, time, location, activity in progress, staff and students present, a factual description of what occurred, the injury sustained, and the care provided.
Formal reporting matters for several reasons: it protects the employee's rights under workers' compensation should complications develop later; it creates the data trail administrators need to justify additional staffing, training, or protective equipment; and it feeds directly back into the behavior support process, ensuring the student's team reviews and strengthens the intervention plan after every incident.
A culture in which staff quietly absorb injuries without reporting them leaves both the teacher and the student without the support they need.
A Layered System, Not a Single Fix
No single measure protects teachers on its own, whether a bite-resistant sleeve, a behavior plan, or an incident form. Safety comes from the layers working together: protective gear and smart positioning reduce harm in the moment, ABC data and functional communication training shrink the number of moments that ever become dangerous, and rigorous medical and reporting protocols ensure that when injuries happen, staff are cared for and the system learns.
Done well, this approach protects more than the adults in the room. It gives the student a path toward safer communication and keeps experienced, confident educators in the classroom where they are needed most.
